In 1979, in the face of the increasing use of acupuncture and the interest of some countries in introducing acupuncture into the national public health system, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed guidelines on the safety of acupuncture and its effectiveness. It was suggested that more than forty diseases could be treated with acupuncture. In 2004, WHO mentions that the efficacy of acupuncture has been demonstrated in numerous clinical trials as well as in laboratory experiments.
